On January 15, 2024, the Materials Industry Club (MIC) hosted a Solidworks workshop in the Myhal computer lab, organized by Kyla Tan. Certified Solidworks volunteers were paired with novice users to guide them through designing a generic keychain. After the initial instruction, the novices had the chance to work on their own designs, with mentors readily available to answer any questions.

Five novice participants attended, supported by four experienced volunteers. The intimate group allowed for close mentorship, giving participants personal attention as they learned the program. Despite not booking the ECF lab in advance, the event proceeded smoothly, and the near 1:1 mentor-to-mentee ratio was instrumental in ensuring the novices could thoroughly grasp the material.

This workshop was particularly valuable for first- and second-year students, offering them a chance to gain practical skills for future internships while building relationships with upper-year mentors.

MIC’s Solidworks workshop successfully introduced beginners to a key technical skill and provided a platform for mentorship and networking. The event's format proved highly effective, and the club plans to continue and promote similar workshops in the future to further support early-year students in their professional development.
