On September 6, 2023, the MSE faculty hosted an orientation in WB130 for the incoming first-year class, with MIC in attendance. The event introduced students to the faculty through brief speeches from professors, administrative staff, and current undergraduate and graduate students. Booths were set up around the room, representing various MSE-related clubs and research projects, providing students with opportunities to connect with faculty, upper-year students, and peers.

The event ran from 11 AM to 2 PM, with guest speeches ending at noon, after which students mingled and visited the various booths. At the MIC booth, representatives Mark Gorban and Marc Zhang presented the club, shared its plans for the school year, and encouraged sign-ups. They brought 90 printed pamphlets, a computer for a slideshow, a tablet for membership sign-ups, and 24 promotional stickers.

This event offered a valuable opportunity for MIC to recruit new members and raise awareness about the club. Eighteen students signed up to be general members, and pamphlets containing information about upcoming events and club contact details were distributed. While the slideshow provided information, a large poster or infographic could have been more effective for conveying key points quickly. Emphasizing social media information could also improve future communication with students.

The orientation successfully introduced the new MSE class to the department and helped MIC promote its activities to incoming students while gaining new members.
